You probably won’t be surprised to learn that we will not be hosting our Broadway Ball fundraising event this September due to COVID-19. “The cancellation wasn’t an easy decision as the proceeds from this event play a critical role in supporting our arts education programs” says Sabrina Weiss, Vice President of Development.

Last year, O-pa reached more than 100,000 students and community members, providing a wide array of engagement and learning opportunities. O-pa’s education activities include two key programs:

  • Disney Musicals in Schools - Provides musical theater programs in underserved elementary schools. Reaching more than 1,300 students in grades 3-6, teachers are able to bring students together to produce their very own school show.
  • Nebraska High School Theater Academy (NHSTA) - The NHSTA program celebrates high school musicals across Nebraska. It provides master classes, professional feedback on school performances and live Broadway theater experiences, reaching more than 8,000 students from 85 schools annually.

Artistic activities provide students with outlets for imagination and self-expression that builds confidence, critical thinking and overall emotional wellness. More than anything, these programs provide opportunities for our young people to dream.

“I feel like a seed was planted when I first started participating. I’ve just been so inspired by the different opportunities and with the different people that they’ve (NHSTA) connected me with” says NHSTA alumni, Brannon Evans.

Lane Mongeon, a former NHSTA student from Milford, NE also recalls his experience.  “I felt alone in the farm community but as soon as I got to NHSTA it was like oh my gosh there’s a whole state of people that love doing what I’m doing too and it’s so inspiring.”

When schools resume and theaters re-open, students will need to come together to experience the kinds of learning that the arts can offer beyond those that are virtual.

For the 2020/2021 season our goal is to raise $200,000 for O-pa’s education and community engagement programs. No gift is too small and every dollar supports students in their quest to create, grow and connect. Let’s dream big together and keep our youth connected to the arts in the 2020/2021 season.
