O-pa Celebrates Virtual Earth Day Omaha

This month the country celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day on April 22! During this time of COVID-19, celebrating all the gifts the world and nature make available to us seems more urgent now than ever.  This year Omaha Performing Arts was excited to partner with Earth Day Omaha 2020.   The mission of Earth Day Omaha is to organize and direct the city's annual Earth Day event. This includes providing a showcase for the many efforts in Omaha that support environmentally friendly lifestyles.

On Saturday, April 18 we were unable to gather in-person. However, we proudly participated in the showcase virtually.  O-pa practices sustainability through recycling, composting, reducing energy consumption and reusing materials in our buildings. These practices have been used amongst our staff, Guckenheimer, our food service provider and throughout the Holland Center (back-of-house locations).  We plan to carry out these initiatives at the Orpheum Theater and to our patrons in both venues.  We’re also happy to announce that during our 2020/2021 Season Reveal, we successfully held a zero-waste event where all items were composted or recycled.

O-pa special projects manager Andrea Purdy is the leader behind O-pa’s green efforts. “I believe it is the responsibility of individuals and organizations to evaluate their environmental impact and make efforts toward reducing their carbon footprint. I am excited that O-pa shares this belief and actively seeks out ways to become more environmentally sustainable. As an individual who practices near zero-waste living, it is inspiring to participate in large-scale changes that will make a big impact in our community.”
O-pa will continue to develop partnerships with eco-friendly companies to achieve our goal of a zero-waste facility and reduce our carbon footprint amongst staff, volunteers, patrons and artists at our venues. Even as we work from home during this time, our employees have proven how simple an environmentally-conscious life can be! Take a look below at some photos they shared as we celebrated virtual Earth Day Omaha.
