A band is only as good as its drummer. While this statement oversimplifies many of the elements that go into making an ensemble sound great, it does present an essential truth about just how important the drum set is to the quality of any performance. Given this importance, educators must develop an array of drum-specific approaches to help students progress from simply being timekeepers to playing in a manner that directs the actions of the entire ensemble.
Drummer Jeffery Johnson, a percussionist at Offutt Air Force Base with the Heartland of America Band, will join Jazz Academy teaching artist Shawn Bell to co-facilitate this hands-on workshop for teachers.
In addition to this free workshop, participants will receive free digital access to a full class curriculum for teaching the 12 bar blues song form, including handouts, play along recordings, and example solos for beginning and intermediate improvisers in the keys of Bb and F.
