A band is only as good as its drummer. While this statement oversimplifies many of the elements that go into making an ensemble sound great, it does present an essential truth about just how important the drum set is to the quality of any performance. Given this importance, educators must develop an array of drum-specific approaches to help students progress from simply being timekeepers to playing in a manner that directs the actions of the entire ensemble.
Kansas City based drummer Brandon Draper will join Jazz Academy teaching artist Shawn Bell to facilitate this hands-on workshop. Along with being an active freelance player, Draper also teaches drum set, world percussion, and sound design at the University of Kansas.
In addition to this free workshop, participants will receive free digital access to a full class curriculum for teaching the 12 bar blues song form, including handouts, play along recordings, and example solos for beginning and intermediate improvisers in the keys of Bb and F.
