All 625 students from the freshman class of Omaha’s Central High School will attend a performance of Disney’s THE LION KING, while the North American tour of the Broadway spectacular musical plays the Orpheum Theater, Feb. 29–March 24, 2024.

The special opportunity was coordinated by Omaha Performing Arts President Joan Squires, Central High School Principal Dionne Kirksey and anonymous and generous donors who value the importance of theatrical experiences for young people.

“The arts are vital to a well-rounded education and a thriving community, and the opportunity to see a production of this caliber can be life changing,” said Squires. “I can’t wait to experience the energy and excitement of the show through these students’ eyes, and I’m thankful for generous individuals who are providing the tickets and supporting these students. We are also grateful to Disney Theatrical Group who worked closely with us to make this special night possible.”

The news was shared with the students at a school pep rally. For the performance, they will be seated in prime seats in the orchestra level of the Orpheum Theater.

“When I received the news of this generous gift, I cried,” Principal Kirksey said. “As I think of the themes of The Lion King, the ones that stand out are friendship, love, resiliency and boldness. I believe resiliency and boldness are the soft skills that many of my students are still developing and need the most. I am certain this performance will give students the opportunity to connect with the characters and themes, understanding everything is the circle of life. I am so appreciative of this opportunity for our students, and yes, I will be crying on March 19.”

More than 100 million people around the world have experienced the awe-inspiring visual artistry, the unforgettable music and the uniquely theatrical storytelling of Disney’s The Lion King – one of the most breathtaking and beloved productions ever to grace the stage.
